Silence Cutter
A single-file Python script that removes dead air from a video and gives you a tighter jump-cut edit.
- Requires
- Python 3 and ffmpeg/ffprobe on PATH
- Platform
- Linux (anything with Python and ffmpeg)
- Size
- One file, no pip packages
- Defaults
- -30 dB threshold · 0.5 s minimum silence · 0.15 s padding
Silence Cutter finds the silent stretches in a video’s audio track, cuts them out, and renders a new video with the same resolution and audio. Only the dead air is gone.
Use it
python3 silence_cutter.py INPUT.mp4 [OUTPUT.mp4]
The threshold, minimum silence length and padding are constants at the top of the script if you want to tune them.
Tested
On 2026-10-28 I ran it on a 9-second test clip with two stretches of silence. It found both and wrote a 4.6-second output.
