sc-native: native StarCraft engine for Linux

sc-native is my from-scratch native engine for StarCraft. Two installers are available for Ubuntu and Linux Mint (tested on Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04, Debian 12, and Linux Mint 22). Both carry only the engine’s source code, which they compile on your own computer.

No game data included. The installers contain no StarCraft game data. You need an existing StarCraft (Remastered) install for the engine to read from. The installer looks for it automatically (Wine, Lutris and Bottles prefixes, ~/Games, mounted drives) or asks you for the folder.

Self-extracting installer .run

Per-user install, no root needed unless build packages are missing. Recommended.

Debian package .deb

System-wide install through apt. Build tools are pulled in as dependencies.

Version 0.1.0 (early release). Checksums: SHA256SUMS. Verify with sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS. More about the project: StarCraft native engine.

Install

sh sc-native-0.1.0-linux-installer.run # asks before installing packages
sh sc-native-0.1.0-linux-installer.run --game DIR # use this StarCraft folder
sh sc-native-0.1.0-linux-installer.run --yes # no questions

The installer:

  1. Installs any missing packages with apt (g++ make cmake ninja-build pkg-config libsdl2-dev zlib1g-dev, optionally libvorbisfile3 libvpxN libstorm9 zenity). It uses sudo only if something is missing.
  2. Compiles the engine with CMake/Ninja.
  3. Installs it to ~/.local/lib/sc-native/, with the launcher ~/.local/bin/sc-native and a “StarCraft (sc-native)” menu entry.
  4. Finds your StarCraft folder, or asks for it.
  5. Runs a self-check.

.deb (system-wide)

sudo apt install ./sc-native_0.1.0_all.deb # apt installs the build tools as dependencies

The package holds the source in /usr/src/sc-native-<ver>. Its post-install step compiles it into /usr/lib/sc-native (log: /var/log/sc-native-build.log) and runs the self-check. The launcher asks each user for their StarCraft folder on first start if it isn’t found.

Uninstall

# .run installer
~/.local/lib/sc-native/uninstall.sh [--purge] [--remove-deps]

# .deb
sudo apt remove sc-native

uninstall.sh removes exactly the files listed in install-manifest.txt. --purge also deletes progress and saves (~/.local/share/sc-native). --remove-deps removes the packages the installer added.

Launcher

sc-native [DIR] | --choose | --selfcheck | --find | --setup [DIR]

Your chosen StarCraft folder is saved in ~/.local/share/sc-native/install-path.txt. A folder counts as StarCraft when it has .build.info (version 1.x, so StarCraft II is refused) and Data/data.
